Temporary closure of the Chisos Basin starting in July

A fresh chapter begins for Big Bend National Park!

Starting July 1st, major construction and renovation work will take place in the Chisos Basin area. Located in Southwest Texas, the state’s largest national park is about to undergo a significant transformation in this area of the park. The extensive project is expected to last around two years, during which the entire Chisos Basin area will be closed to visitors until further notice.

The closures will include Basin Road, the campground, the visitor center, the restaurant, the camp store, surrounding trails, and the Chisos Mountains Lodge — the only hotel located inside the park. The lodge is set to reopen with a brand-new look in 2027.

In the meantime, visitors can explore alternative accommodations in the nearby historic towns of Terlingua or Lajitas, just a few miles from the park’s southern entrance. The towns offer a wide variety of lodging options, from glamping experiences to more traditional hotels — ideal for enjoying the region from a different angle.

Good news is that the other areas of Big Bend National Park remain fully open. Visitors can still discover breathtaking sites like Santa Elena Canyon, Balanced Rock, and Boquillas Canyon, all while enjoying the park’s stunning scenic drives.
