The Castro district is the first LGBTQ+ neighborhood in the United States. Harvey Milk, the city’s first openly gay elected official, played a pivotal role in its history, championing the rights and freedoms of the LGBTQ+ community and introducing the iconic rainbow flag.

Today, Castro is a haven for all. Its colorful streets, rainbow crosswalks and Victorian houses adorned with the Freedom flag make it a unique neighborhood. It’s also one of San Francisco’s most festive neighborhoods after dark.

For a complete experience, don’t miss the iconic Castro Theatre, a historic movie palace showcasing both classic and contemporary films, or Pink Triangle Memorial, which pays tribute to the LGBT victims of the Holocaust. At the center of the park is a triangle filled with stones, including rose quartz crystals, which visitors are encouraged to take as a sign of remembrance.

To get the most of the visit, there’s nothing like a guided tour, private or with a small group, with a local French-speaking agency based in San Francisco, such as L’Esprit San Francisco, Californie Off Road and Voyage en Français.
